Portable GPS Tracker Australia: Move It Between Vehicles
If you want to move a GPS tracker between compatible cars or utes, an OBD plug-in tracker is a practical option. It takes power from the vehicle’s diagnostic port and connects to the EZY GPS app and web dashboard.
If you need a tracker for an asset without a suitable vehicle power supply, compare the S20-Pro asset tracker and ask our team about its suitability. The right choice depends on what you are tracking, how it will be mounted and how you will keep it powered.
Moving an OBD tracker between vehicles
Check that each vehicle has a compatible, accessible OBD-II port. Turn the ignition off before removing the tracker, then follow the setup instructions when fitting it to the next vehicle. Confirm that the correct vehicle appears in your account and that location reporting has resumed.
One tracker reports the vehicle it is currently fitted to. To track multiple vehicles at the same time, each needs its own device and plan.
Our OBD port guide can help you find the port. If you are unsure about compatibility, share the makes, models and years with our team before ordering.
When plug-in is a good fit
- You want installation without hardwiring.
- You may change vehicles and want to take the tracker with you.
- You want to try tracking on one compatible vehicle before equipping a fleet.
- You have room around the diagnostic port for the device.
A plug-in tracker is easier to spot and unplug than a concealed hardwired device. It relies on vehicle power for normal use; any internal backup is temporary.
When to choose hardwired
A hardwired tracker connects to the vehicle’s electrical system and can be fitted out of sight. It suits vehicles that will keep the same tracker or do not have a suitable OBD port available.
Professional installation is recommended and paid for separately. Moving a hardwired device to another vehicle requires removal and installation work, so include those costs when comparing options.
An optional immobiliser may be available for a suitable hardwired installation. Confirm compatibility, additional hardware and safe installation with your installer. This option is not available on the OBD plug-in tracker.
Comparing portable and battery-powered trackers
Check the power source, charging requirements, mounting method, mobile coverage and reporting settings. Battery-powered trackers and vehicle-powered trackers have different operating requirements; choose the device that suits the asset and your maintenance routine.
Also check what the plan includes, whether you need a separate SIM and how to get support. EZY GPS can help you compare the options for your vehicle or equipment.
Plans and delivered prices
Choose A$275 including GST per device for five years, paid once, or A$77 including GST per device per year while subscribed.
Both plans include the tracker, SIM, data, app access and Australian support on supported Optus/Vodafone coverage. Standard postage is A$11 per order. One device is A$286 delivered on the five-year plan or A$88 initially on the annual plan. Service-only annual renewals are A$77 per device, with no postage charge.
Hardwired installation is arranged and paid for separately. A Telstra option requires a separate quote. Check current plans and pricing or ask our team about coverage and your vehicles.
