Vehicle GPS Tracker Australia: OBD or Hardwired?
A vehicle GPS tracker helps you see where your car, ute or van is and review where it has travelled. With EZY GPS, you can choose an OBD plug-in tracker or a permanently installed hardwired tracker. Both connect to the same app and web dashboard.
The main choice is how you want the device fitted. Compare vehicle trackers, or use this guide to decide which installation suits you.
What can you see in the app?
View vehicle locations, review trip history and set geofences around places such as home, work or a yard. Available alerts can help you keep track of movement and changes in device power.
Location reporting depends on mobile coverage, GPS reception and the device’s configuration and power. Check coverage with our team if your vehicle travels through regional or remote areas.
OBD plug-in: easy to fit and move
The OBD plug-in tracker plugs into a compatible vehicle’s diagnostic port without hardwiring. It suits drivers who want a straightforward installation or may move the tracker to another compatible vehicle.
The port is commonly under the driver’s dashboard. Check your vehicle’s compatibility and the space around the port before ordering. Our OBD port guide can help you find it.
Because the device plugs into an accessible port, it is easier to spot or unplug than a concealed hardwired unit. Choose it for convenient installation and portability.
Hardwired: discreet and permanent
A hardwired tracker connects to the vehicle’s electrical system and can be installed out of sight. It suits vehicles that will keep the same tracker, including work utes, vans and fleet vehicles.
Professional installation is recommended. Arrange and pay for installation separately, and ask the installer for a vehicle-specific quote. Contact EZY GPS if you need help finding an independent installer.
An optional immobiliser may be available for a suitable hardwired installation. Confirm compatibility, additional hardware and safe installation with your installer before choosing this option.
Which tracker should you choose?
- Choose OBD plug-in if your vehicle has a compatible port and you want a device you can fit without hardwiring and move later.
- Choose hardwired if you want a discreet, permanent installation or do not have a suitable OBD port available.
- Ask for help if you have a truck, an unusual vehicle or a fleet with different vehicle types. Share the makes, models and years so we can recommend a suitable setup.
Use tracking on vehicles you own or are authorised to manage. Make sure drivers understand how tracking is used.
Plans and delivered prices
Choose five years for A$275 including GST per device, paid once, or an annual plan for A$77 including GST per device per year while subscribed.
Both options include the tracker, SIM, data, app access and Australian support on supported Optus/Vodafone coverage. Standard postage is A$11 per order, making one device A$286 delivered on the five-year plan or A$88 initially on the annual plan. Service-only annual renewals are A$77 per device with no postage charge.
Hardwired installation is arranged and paid for separately. A Telstra option requires a separate quote. See current plans and pricing, or ask our team about your vehicles and coverage.
